Turkey
has recorded economic advances since the 1980's and the share of
industrial products exports reached about 84.9% of its total
exports. The share of mining products was 2% of its total exports.
However, further exploration and investment in the mineral sector
are required since mineral output is not large in terms of quantity
as compared with the existing potential of mineral resources.
Turkey is one of the few countries
that possesses a vast and diverse mineral resource base. Excluding
resources of oil and coal, there are about 4400 mineral deposits in
Turkey. The availability of this wide range of minerals has
contributed to Turkey's industrial development through the supply of
raw materials for its manufacturing industry.
Today, the Turkish mining sector
produces 53 different minerals and some of them are found in
considerable amounts in the country.
The public sector is dominant in fuel
minerals and metallic ores, while the private sector is dominant in
industrial minerals.
