The
Turkish iron-steel industry has shown great progress in the last few
years both in terms of quality and capacity. Today, using the most
advanced technology, the industry is capable of producing
specialized goods for a diverse range of fields. Turkey became the
15th biggest steel producer in the world with a production of 12
million tons in 1994. As of the end of October, 1995, the total
production of crude steel was 10.8 million tons. The second major
export item of the Turkish industry is iron and steel products which
reached value of $2.3 billion US in 1994.
