THE CITY DEFENCE WALLSAs the city was in no danger of attack during the Byzantine period the stones of which the walls were composed were carried off by the local inhabitants for use as building material. Thus practically nothing survives of the walls apart from a few fragments in reasonably good condition. These remains, which are to be found mainly in the area between the martyrium of St. Philip and the theatre, are composed of carefully hewn stone blocks displaying very fine stone workmanship. Traces of a number of monumental buildings and several gates can be observed on the city side section of the walls extending along the slopes of the mountain, but as in some places no excavations have so far been carried and in others excavations already begun have not yet been completed, nothing definite is known concerning the nature of these structures. |
